What your child is really learning in a parent and child swimming lesson
Updated: Oct 9
There’s More Happening Than Just Swimming
When you and your child take part in a parent and child lesson at Let’s Swim! it might feel like you are singing songs, reaching for toys, climbing onto platforms and taking turns. But there is so much more learning happening beneath the surface.
In our parent and child lessons, parents are learning alongside their child. We’re not only teaching swimming skills, we’re helping parents understand how their child learns, why we include each activity and how to support them safely and confidently.

Hand-eye coordination and body awareness
When a baby reaches for a floating toy, they are developing visual tracking, grasping and hand-eye coordination. Holding onto the wall builds grip strength and body awareness, and reaching across their body for toys encourages crossing the midline. This helps the left and right sides of the body work together and later supports everyday skills such as dressing, drawing and writing.
Balance and movement
Rolling, turning and moving in different directions supports balance and helps children understand how their body moves through the water. Climbing onto a platform or out of the pool builds strength, coordination and independence.
Language, listening and memory
Songs and repeated instructions support language, listening and memory. Children learn through repetition, encouragement and plenty of opportunities to try.
Building water safety skills
Our lessons build each skill upon the one before it, supporting children’s development while safely challenging them to prepare for unexpected moments, such as losing their footing or slipping into the water. With practice, they learn to stay calm, turn towards the wall and reach for safety. As their parent, you can feel more confident knowing they are developing these skills and seeing what they are capable of in class. Active adult supervision around water is always essential, and our teachers will talk you through how to keep your child safe in and around the pool.

You're part of the lesson
Parents are an important part of this learning. Our teachers explain how to hold, support and guide children, when to step in and when to give them time to try for themselves.
At Let’s Swim! we know learning to swim and children’s development go hand in hand. The activities in our lessons are helping your child work towards important developmental milestones, while building swimming and water safety skills. Just as importantly, we want parents to understand why we do them and how each small step supports what comes next.
